Chapter 10 and 11

Chapter 10

Paul D's body is shaking and he sees himself on Sweet Home staring at a rooster named Mister. After Sweet Home comes Alfred, Georgia and Paul D is one of forty-six chain gang workers who are living in ditches. Their heavy labor is that of using a sledgehammer to smash mountain rock. The guards shoot men at will and enforce other horrors. Their work pauses under days of heavy rain and as the rains continue for a week, the men realize that they are going to drown, locked in the ditches where they live. Led by Hi Man, the forty-six men climb out together and run into the forest. Fortunately, it continues to rain and so there is little activity in the countryside and forest, otherwise, they would have certainly been captured. They soon found a diseased remnant of a Cherokee society and the Indians remove their chains and provide them with food.

Chapter 11

Paul D is now back in 124 Bluestone Road and while he used to sleep with Sethe, he now finds himself sleeping in a chair downstairs. And after that, he is sleeping in Baby Suggs' room. Paul D thinks that he is having "house fits" from staying in the same place for such a long time, but he is still fond of Sethe. After Baby Suggs' room, Paul D moves to the storeroom and by the time he was living in the cold house, he realized that his movements were completely involuntary. He questions his manhood and eventually, he sees that Beloved is the one who has him in a "fix." Finally, one night, Beloved appears in Paul D's cold house bed and he is immediately disturbed. Even though he asks her to leave, she stays and says to him: "I want you to touch me on the inside parts and call me my name." Paul D tries to resist Beloved but he eventually gives in to his temptation.
