\\ home \ Ethan Frome:
Did You Know

Edith Wharton actually began writing Ethan Frome in French as an exercise for a French class that required her both to speak and write in the language. Years after she took the class, she was diagnosed with neurasthenia, and her doctor suggested that she take up writing while she was recovering in bed. She found what she had started of the story and then finished it in English.

Wharton was inspired to write Ethan Frome after reading an article in a small-town newspaper about a fatal sled smash-up and immediately began to construct a romantic story about thwarted love that lay hidden behind the tragedy of the crash.
