When Billy boarded a plane full of optometrists 25 years later, he knew it was going to crash, but he didn't want to make a fool of himself. He was seated next to his father-in-law. A barbershop quartet of optometrists, The Febs (aka The Four Eyed Bastards) sang the daddy-in-law's favorite songs, full of Polish jokes. In Dresden, Billy had seen a Polish farm laborer hung for having sex with a German woman. Billy then time traveled to the forest in Luxembourg again. The plane of optometrists crashed. Only Billy and the co-pilot survived. Young Austrian ski instructors found them. Billy, thinking he was in WWII, whispered his address, "Schlachthof-funf." He was taken into a small private hospital and operated on. He and Edger Derby were being led by a young guard to a communal kitchen, but he had never been in the slaughterhouse before and opened the wrong door. Thirty teenage girls, German refugees, were naked. Werner Gluck-the guard-and Billy had never seen a naked girl before. When they finally got to the kitchen, only one woman was left waiting for them. "All of the real soldiers are dead," she said with disdain. It was true. While unconscious, Billy saw another Dresden moment. The Americans were working in a factory that made vitamin-enriched syrup for pregnant women. Everyone spooned it all day long. When Billy saw Derby outside looking in longingly, he made him a lollipop and thrust it in his mouth. Derby burst into tears and Billy hid the spoon. Someone was coming.
