Chapter 4 - Doc Daneeka
Yossarian helps Doc Daneeka by faking the flight logs so as to show that the doctor has fulfilled his monthly quota of flight time. He must do this to receive his flight pay. In return, Doc Daneeka does nothing when Yossarian asks to be declared unfit to fly.
Clevinger begins a series of education sessions designed to foster discussion of the political and social issues of the war. At these sessions, Yossarian and others ask nonsensical questions such as "Why is Spain?" and Clevinger eventually changes the rules (in another example of a Catch-22) so that only those who never ask questions are permitted to ask them. In short order, the sessions are dispensed with because they are pointless without questions.
Meanwhile, the absurd rivalry between Generals Peckem and Dreedle continues, as the former sets up a skeet shooting range on the base for officers, and the latter opens it up to all the men. As a result, Yossarian and all the men on the base must spend eight hours a month shooting skeet. In a general memorandum written on behalf of General Peckem, Colonel Cargill asks if anyone can name a man who was smart and yet could still make money. Ex-PFC Wintergreen, having read the correspondence, telephones Peckem's office and when Cargill answers the phone, says simply, "T.S. Eliot" and hangs up. This sets off a juvenile bout of prank-calling between Generals Peckem and Dreedle in which each calls the other, saying only "T.S. Eliot" and hanging up.
