REMEMBERING WHEATSTONE

English physicist Charles Wheatstone (1802–1875) had no formal training in science. He came from a family that made and sold musical instruments. Wheatstone went on to become an inventor of such devices as the stereoscope, in which two images (photographs) are viewed to create the illusion of 3-D.
